Rolls-Royce partners with EDP Renewables APAC on renewable energy use in its Singapore operations with installation of solar panels

Singapore, 5 October 2023 – Rolls-Royce has signed a Power Purchase Agreement with renewable energy provider EDP Renewables APAC to install solar panels at its Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia facility located at the Tukang Innovation Park in Singapore.

EDP Renewables APAC will install 2,337 solar panels on the rooftops of all three blocks of the Tukang facility with a total capacity of 1,425-kilowatt peak.

The solar photovoltaic system is expected to be operational by July 2024. Once completed, it will generate enough renewable energy to meet approximately a third of the site’s energy requirements.

Based on the total generated capacity, the estimated carbon abatement will be about 600 tonnes annually. This will allow the facility, home to the company’s Power Systems Asia Pacific business, to halve its carbon footprint.

The solar photovoltaic system is designed to maximise energy generation and efficiency by utilising 100% of space at the facility that is capable of supporting solar panels. The use of bifacial solar panels also reflects light from both surfaces. In addition, the solar energy generated is fed into the system based on the different load for each building, increasing the facility’s solar energy consumption by 10% as a whole.

Furthermore, Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia operations will enjoy cost savings from lower energy prices.

Giovanni Spadaro, President, Global Markets and Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Solutions Asia, said:

“The renewable energy solution is a significant initiative in our ongoing pursuit of sustainable operations. We are pleased to have EDP Renewables APAC as our partner on this solar installation project for our facility in Tukang.”

Filipa Ricciardi, Executive Director of Client Solutions & Asset Operations, EDP Renewables APAC, said:

“We take immense pride in this partnership with Rolls-Royce, a global leader in technology and innovation. Together, we’re not just installing solar panels; we’re guiding its operations on a transformative journey towards cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions. This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to a greener, brighter future for businesses and to Singapore.”

This is the second solar installation project for Rolls-Royce in Singapore. In 2015, 11,700 units were installed on the roof and carpark of Rolls-Royce Singapore campus at Seletar Aerospace Park. The solar panels continue to supply about 10% of the Seletar Campus energy needs.

This is part of EDP Renewables APAC’s committed capacity of 435MWp in Singapore. Recently, the company also obtained conditional approval to import 400MW of clean, renewable energy from Indonesia to Singapore. In the APAC region, the company has more than doubled its installed capacity to about 1GWp over the span of just 18-months.
