In our most recent efforts to support these communities, we worked to improve the living situations of three families in Portugal, Poland and Brazil.
In the Portuguese town of Aldeia Velha, we met an 85-year-old woman. She was living near the EDPR wind farm at Beira Interior, in a house that lacked electricity. The Closer2you team rebuilt the out and inner walls, replace the roof and the floor. Installed also drinking water and plumbing systems. We also build a WC and replaced the doors and windows to provide, along with the renewed roof, better insulation during the cold winter months.
In Poland, we discovered a similar situation. Near the Tomaszów wind farm in Majdan Górny, we found a family with three small children who could not keep their house warm in winter. The Closer2you team rebuilt the walls, replaced the roof, built a chimney and installed gas, electricity and plumbing systems. We also replaced the doors and windows to provide better insulation during the cold winter months.
Finally, the Closer2you team rebuilt a house from the ground up in a small Brazilian community. In the Gitirana community, four kilometers away from the Babilônia Wind Complex and 34 kilometers away from the nearest town, there is a village made up of just 22 families. Its isolated location and extremely dry climate make daily life difficult; there is no sewage system, garbage collection service or public health facility nearby. What’s more, limited access to water and a harsh climate hinder agricultural production and economic activity.
In these challenging conditions, we encountered a family of five living in an unfinished mud house, consisting of just a living room, a kitchen and one bedroom. The precarious structure made it impossible to build on the house’s existing foundation. In order to provide this family with a safe and structurally sound place to live, we completely reconstructed their home over the course of two months.
By doing what we can to improve safety and quality of life in the communities where we operate, we thank their inhabitants for welcoming us and supporting our efforts. In this way, EDPR continues to uphold our core values of sustainability and social responsibility—not only through words, but through actions that truly make a positive impact.
