Elkhorn Valley wind farm employees hosted more than 100 sixth graders for their annual field trip on May 21.
The South Baker Intermediate (located in Baker City, Oregon) students arrived at the site early in the morning on the 21st and immediately started participating in activities. The students listened to an introduction about the wind farm before learning about the ROCC, transmission, and power generation forecasts from Dotti Logsdon (Elkhorn Valley Administrator) and Curtis Pedro (Site Lead Technician). Following the presentations, Pedro demonstrated how a turbine can be controlled remotely. Using a wall monitor, he stopped a turbine as the sixth graders observed.
Elsewhere on site, Scout Cloutier (Elkhorn Valley Operations Manager) and several Vestas site managers led the students in a hands-on construction activity where students competed for prizes. Students were also given the opportunity to explore the warehouse and learn about tools and parts.
The field trip concluded with a walk to the nearest turbine, where the groups took pictures
