On Tuesday, August 18, EDPR hosted 90 summer campers at its South Branch KidWind Day from both the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG and Crysler camps at the Dixons Corner Community Center.
The day included an assortment of hands-on science-based learning activities led by the KidWind teachers and an educational bus tour of the South Branch wind farm directed by Ken Little (Project Manager II) and Ryan O'Connor (Project Developer). The kids remained very engaged during the tour and asked a lot of great questions about wind energy and the Siemens 113-3.0MW turbines, which are the largest in Canada. In order to show the kids the massive size of the turbine blades, EDPR staff measured out the blade length (55m) on the Community Center field to demonstrate the scale of the turbines.
"The kids at Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG's summer camps were excited to visit the wind farm and participate in KidWind Day. The lessons on renewable energy and wind power as well as the building of their own miniature wind turbines was very a valuable learning experience," Deborah Locke, Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG Program Manager said. "As part of our program, we always look for fun and educational experiences, and KidWind Day is a perfect fit!"
Ken Little also thought the day was a success and had a lot of fun, too.
"It was great to host the summer campers at the wind farm for the second year. We received great feedback from the organizers and kids and look forward to hosting them again next year," Little said.
