EDPR grants the project “Waste-to-hydrogen – an innovative Clean Energy Vector” with the first prize in the University Challenge awards
The project has been submitted by UPC University from Barcelona, TU/e from Eindhoven (Netherlands), ESADE and AGH from Poland and is focused on hydrogen production from waste materials.
The second place has been awarded to the work presented by the Polytechnic School of engineering of Gijon and the University of Oviedo on “RE-WIND”, a viability study of the reutilization of wind turbine blades and “Smart EV Charging Point”, promoted by the students of the same university has been the third classified.
It is the 13th edition of this competition, a reflection of EDPR's purpose to build bridges between the university and business community.
EDP Renewables (Euronext: EDPR), the world's fourth largest renewable energy producer, has granted this morning the awards of the "University Challenge" competition addressed to students from European universities. The event was held this morning in digital format and was chaired by Miguel Stilwell, CEO of EDP and EDPR.
This is the thirteenth consecutive year of the EDPR "University Challenge", which was first promoted by the company in Spain in 2009. Throughout its history, more than 1,850 students and 400 professors from more than 330 universities have participated. As a result, more than 800 innovative projects in the areas of marketing, business administration and engineering have been evaluated by renowned professionals in the field of renewable energies who made up the jury in its various editions.
It should be noted that this latest edition is the third consecutive edition in which the EDPR "University Challenge" has expanded its borders by incorporating projects from centers from other European countries and with a representation of more than 30 nationalities, in addition to those from Spanish universities.
The winning project was entitled "Waste-to-hydrogen – an innovative Clean Energy Vector", carried out by students from UPC University from Barcelona, TU/e from Eindhoven (Netherlands) ESADE and AGH from Poland. The team received a prize of 6,000 euros gross and 3,000 euros for the professor coordinating the project.
The second and third place winners, respectively, were: “RE-WIND”, a viability study for the reutilization of wind turbine blades at the end of their service life through alternative energy generation methods, presented by students from the Polytechnic School of engineering of Gijon and the University of Oviedo; and “Smart EV Charging Point”, presented by students from the same university. These works received awards of 3,000 euros and 2,000 euros for the students who formed the groups, and 1,500 and 1,000 euros for the coordinating teachers of these projects.
Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade, CEO of EDP and EDP Renewables, stated: "Holding the University Challenge for the thirteenth consecutive year not only reaffirms the company's commitment to the innovative and creative talent of the university community, but also helps us to keep the interest in renewable energy alive among those who will design the future. Driving the energy transition is essential to meet the net zero emissions targets of the Paris Agreement, and only by fostering innovation we can effectively achieve it in all sectors”.
